Malaysia has inaugurated its first mobile hydrogen refueling station in Peninsular Malaysia, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s hydrogen mobility journey.

The pilot project was launched by Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang and is considered the first of its kind in the region. This facility is the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) and the National Nanotechnology Centre.

Major industry players such as PETRONAS Technology Ventures, Sime UMW, UMW Toyota Motor, and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) were also involved in the project.

Designed to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen-powered mobility, the site serves as both a refueling point and a testbed for future hydrogen technologies. It also aims to establish partnerships with fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) suppliers for pilot testing and validation, helping lay the groundwork for broader hydrogen vehicle adoption.

NanoMalaysia Berhad operates the station and is responsible for testing and identifying long-term commercialization opportunities.

PETRONAS oversees the supply and technical execution of the station, while UMW Toyota has provided three Toyota Mirai hydrogen vehicles to support on-road demonstrations.

MGTC is evaluating the feasibility of FCEV deployment on local roads based on real-world usage data. Officials believe this project will serve as a catalyst for industry participation, encouraging investors and stakeholders to contribute to the development of Malaysia’s hydrogen economy.
