The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) recently organised the National Energy Awards (NEA) 2023, where 38 local industry players were recognised for their outstanding efforts in implementing new energy practices and energy efficiency.

The awards were presented by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof cum Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

The energy sector, particularly electricity supply, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions in Malaysia.

Fadillah emphasised that PETRA is dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of the electricity supply sector through initiatives such as increasing renewable energy capacity, phasing out coal-fired power plants, and enhancing grid system resilience.

The Ministry focus on the implementation of the 3D initiative – Digitalisation, Decentralisation, and Decarbonisation – underscores its commitment to advancing green investment and technology development.

Additionally, PETRA aims to reduce carbon emissions intensity by 45% by 2025 and 60% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels, aligning with the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.

“The Ministry also committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity from electricity generation by gradually reducing installed capacity of coal-fired generation (phase down) and halting the development of new coal-fired power plants (phase out).” he added.

He further added, “the Ministry is committed to enhance grid system resilience through digitalisation integration and energy storage system development to enable higher solar capacity integration and finalise the drafting of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill to regulate energy use by high-intensity users in the commercial and industrial sectors, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Since its inception in 2018, the NEA has seen a growing number of entries each year.

In 2023, a total of 114 entries were received, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions, along with substantial cost savings.

Twenty-three winners of the NEA 2023 went on to represent the country at the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) 2023, where 12 nominations secured awards in categories listed as below:

a. Category 1: Energy Management

b. Category 2: Energy Efficient Buildings

c. Category 3: Renewable Energy

d. Category 4: Special Award
