Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Zafrul Aziz has said that the potential collaboration between Malaysia and Tesla will include not be limited to the electric vehicle (EV) sector, according to Bernama. Zafrul was speaking at the soft launch of the International Electric Mobility Showcase (IEMS) this week.
Through the collaboration with Tesla, Malaysia hopes to increase its potential and attract more investment commitments in the automotive sector and other sectors in the nation.
Zafrul also confirmed that there would be a call between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, before the end of the week.
Tesla will be expected to take part in the upcoming IEMS 2023 scheduled from 4 to 6 October according to Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, group chief executive officer of Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC).
Elaborating further, Shamsul shared that IEMS 2023 aims to secure RM4 billion in green technology and sustainability-led investment opportunities which is an increase from last year’s RM3 million accomplishment.
IEMS 2023 is expected to see 400 exhibitors from 40 countries such as Taiwan, Japan and Sweden to name a few.
As Malaysia gears up for the launch of Tesla on 20 July 2023 after giving the company the green light to establish an office in Malaysia, the announcement came four months after Malaysia’s Ministry of Trade & Industry (MITI) approved Tesla’s application to import Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) into the country. With this, Tesla can bring in Experience and Service Centres, as well as establish its Supercharger network.
Tesla also recently held a walk-in recruitment day in Cyberjaya, as reported by local media. Last week, the company also launched an official Instagram page for its Malaysian office.
When Tesla’s expansion into Malaysia was first announced, it was noted that the launch could create skilled and better paying job opportunities for workers in the BEV segment and increase the participation of local companies in the Tesla ecosystem both domestically and globally. Minister Zafrul said at that point that the move demonstrates Tesla’s confidence in Malaysia’s economic fundamentals and conducive business environment.
