MASJID Tengku Mahkota Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah has received a rotation hydroponic system under a programme to foster a green lifestyle within the congregation and the local community.
Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corpora-tion (MGTC) donated the rotation hydroponic system to the mosque in Kuantan.
MGTC chief executive officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor said the mosque was the first in Malaysia to receive the hydroponic system created by Zull Design Autotronic.
“This system is an efficient and innovative hydroponic system for fueling the sustainability of our environment.
“It is expected to produce good and quality results in a short time,” he said.
Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants using a water-based nutrient solution rather than soil.
“In addition to benefitting the congregation of the mosque in getting quality food sources, it can indirectly be a source of additional income that contributes to the mosque’s fund,” Shamsul Bahar said in a media statement.
MGTC also said it would provide courses by hydroponics experts to the congregation and the local community.
It said this was an effort to support the Rumah Ibadat Hijau (RIH) programme at the mosque.
“The RIH programme aims to make mosques as catalyst centres for environmental sustainability.
“Since its launch in 2021, a total of 13 mosques have implemented the RIH programme and it will be further expanded to 16 mosques this year.
“This shows high awareness and commitment from the mosque community in caring for the environment and adopting a green lifestyle.”
The corporation said the programme focuses on four main elements — saving electricity, saving water especially during ablution, reduction of waste and proper waste management.
It also encourages the purchase and use of green products and additional income generation through agricultural produce or sale of used waste contributed by the congregation and the local community.
MGTC is an agency mandated by Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry to drive the country into accelerating green growth, advancing climate change mitigation and supporting a green lifestyle culture.
