KUALA LUMPUR, 9 March – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was named winner under the Special Category (Institutes of Higher Learning) for National Energy Awards (NEA) during the NEA 2022 Appreciation Ceremony this evening.

There are three categories under The Special Awards category, namely Energy Performance Contract, Institutes of Higher Learning and Sustainable  Energy Financing. The award is part of NEA’s effort to recognise the significant role of institutions in raising awareness and adopting sustainable practices.

The appreciation ceremony was graced by YB Tuan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change. Representing UTM to receive the award were Prof. Ts. Dr Mohd Hamdan Ahmad, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) and Ms Noor Azlinda Maskor, UTM’s Energy Manager.

The recognition proves to be in line with UTM’s unwavering commitment in upholding its “sustainability” core value.

According to Prof Mohd Hamdan, “Since 2011, UTM has been relentless in its pursuit of a Sustainable Energy Management System. In 2012, we were named the first Malaysian winner of the ASEAN Energy Award for a Large Category Building. UTM was also ASEAN’s first three-star Energy Management Gold Standard certified organisation.”

“The award recognises our commitment to promoting sustainable and efficient energy solutions and positions our university as a leader among other higher institutions in Malaysia in this field.”, he added.

UTM’s latest win at the NEA 2022 Appreciation Ceremony serves as a testament to its continued dedication towards promoting sustainable and efficient energy solutions. The university has made great strides in the field of sustainable energy management, which is evident from its past achievements and its various ongoing initiatives. UTM’s commitment towards sustainability has also been reflected in the launch of its Campus Sustainability Blueprint 2023-2030 last February.

As an award-winning institution that takes pride in its MSc Energy Management programme, UTM is poised to become a leader in this field, setting an example for other higher institutions in Malaysia to follow.
