KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Sweden have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to intensify collaboration in ensuring a greener transition in Malaysia.
The MOU between Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change (MGTC) and Business Sweden is expected to serve as the foundation for a shared commitment to a more sustainable future.
Along with the MoU, Sweden trade commissioner to Malaysia Emma Broms said Business Sweden would also be launching Pioneer the Possible platform.
This sustainability platform allows collaboration, promotion and innovation within the green energy transition.
The platform is expected to be launched on March 14, gathering Swedish companies, influential Malaysian organisations and government representatives who are actively involved in green transition and policy shaping.
“We are thrilled to launch Pioneer the Possible here in Malaysia. The platform aims to promote collaboration within sustainable development in Malaysia with a focus on three themes – green mobility and transport, green production, and sustainable urban development.
“The platform will provide a forum for both Swedish and Malaysian businesses as well as stakeholders to come together to share knowledge and best practices to accelerate the green transition,” said Broms in a statement.
MGTC chief executive officer Ts. Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor said it was honoured to strive for a collaboration with one of the world’s most sustainable countries.
“Internationally, Sweden is known for its significant role in mitigating the impact of climate change.
“Living up to one of the goals of the Paris Agreement, we are excited to receive support from a developed country to elevate our sustainability commitment together.”
He added that Malaysia had set a target to become a carbon-neutral nation as early as 2050 and aimed to reduce its greenhouse gas emission intensity of GDP by 45 per cent by 2030.
“By signing this MoU, we hope to increase the intensity of the progress to achieve these ambitious goals and pursue a greener future,” said Shamsul.
Six Swedish companies are involved in the programme namely IKEA, Monitor ERP, Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks, Atlas Copco and Axis Communications.
Throughout the year, several activities will be arranged, focusing on three themes – green mobility and transport, green production, and sustainable urban development.
There will also be an opportunity for Swedish companies that are not yet on-site in Malaysia to join a delegation with a primary focus on waste and water management.
