MRC and MGTC seal strategic partnership to accelerate net zero transition in Malaysia’s rubber industry

The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) and the Malaysian GreenTechnology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) have on Wednesday formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate net zero transition in Malaysia’s rubber industry.

MRC said in a statement that the MoU builds upon the successful development of The Low Carbon Transition Roadmap for Malaysian Rubber and Rubber Product Manufacturers: Thriving in a Net Zero Economy, jointly undertaken by MRC and MGTC.

The roadmap provided a strategic framework for Malaysia’s rubber sector to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adopt sustainable business practices aligned with national climate goals.

Under this collaboration, MRC and MGTC will move from strategy to implementation by introducing structured GHG management capacity building programs, developing an industry-specific emissions tracking and calculation tool, and undertaking sectoral benchmarking to assess industry readiness toward net zero.

These efforts will build technical capabilities among rubber product manufacturers while providing the necessary tools to measure, manage, and reduce emissions effectively.

To date, more than 50 MRC member companies have participated in MRC’s GHG management initiatives, reflecting growing momentum within the industry to embrace sustainable transformation.

This collaboration complements Malaysia’s National Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and reinforces the country’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

It also aligns with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities’ broader aspiration under the National Agricommodity Policy 2021-2030 (DAKN 2021-2030) to position Malaysia’s rubber industry as a global leader in sustainable production and a trusted supplier of responsibly produced commodities.

The MRC–MGTC partnership exemplifies cross-agency collaboration in fostering low-carbon operation and industry upskilling, paving the way for a more resilient and future-ready Malaysian rubber sector.
